New Zealand is a nation of pet lovers. In New Zealand 68% of households own at least one companion animal, with a total pet population of 5 million, they outnumber people. This is the highest rate of pet ownership in the world.

Cats are New Zealand's most popular pet with 48% percent of households owning an average of two cats. That's a total cat population of 1.4 million.

There are 700,00 pet dogs in New Zealand with 29% of households owning at least one dog.

These pets are more than animals sharing our homes, they are viewed as members of the family and valued companions.

For most pets commercially prepared foods forms the sole source of nutrition. Therefore, consumers expect high standards of quality, nutrition and value.

Members of the NZPFMA are committed to providing consumers and their pets with products that meet the complex nutritional requirements of our companion animals. Petfood manufacturers are always working to increase their knowledge of pet nutrition ensuring the food is palatable and healthy.

MAF will soon delete the Petfood Competency Register from their website. Primary processors must maintain their own list of qualified ante and post-mortem examiners. A letter has been sent to all primary processors outlining the requirements. Any, queries, please email the secretary.

MAF have received advice from FSIS in USA that they will issue permits for the importation of un-denatured inedible meat and meat by-products into US.

MAF have published a draft of Part 1 of the Petfood Code of Practice: Overview.

Submissions are required by 25 November. The Association will be making a submission and would appreciate members' opinions.

The ACVM (Exemptions and Prohibited Substances) Regulations 2011 have been signed into law and come into effect in November 2011. This will have an effect on labeling requirements and a significant effect on petfood processors who operate without an RMP.

Petfood primary processors are required to participate in the Emissions Trading Scheme. A letter has been sent to all those involved outlining these requirements. this will have a significant effect on primary processors.
